Which Reaction GIF Are You?? | Idea Channel | PBS Digital Studios

September 23, 2019

This episode of
Idea Channel starts with a personality quiz,
administered entirely via YouTube. If you have no interest
in that and just want to watch the video,
you can click, here, or find a link in
the description. If you’re sticking around,
here’s how it’s going to work. I’m going to ask you a
question, and you can answer it by clicking Annotations
on the screen, on cards that pop
up in the corner, or by clicking Links
in the doobly-doo. When you do that, you’ll
be taken for a brief moment to our website, where your
answer will get anonymously tabulated. And then, you’ll be
forwarded to the next video and the next question. At the end of four
questions, your answers will be analyzed by a
supreme and highly developed artificial intelligence,
which will determine which regularly-used Idea
Channel reaction gif best represents you. So here we go. Question number one– how do
you pronounce the first letter in this word? One, like gift? Two, like jiffy? Three, like the S in casual? Or four, I dislike conflict
and therefore never pronounce this word out loud. I carry around a small card
with this word printed on it, and I hold it up whenever
it needs to be said, so that it sounds like the
inner voice of whoever reads it. Please choose your answer now. [MUSIC PLAYING]

I have actually just the last couple of weeks been discussing personality testing including the MBTI in my lectures, as I am currently doing a degree in social psychology (and proud Ravenclaw). I am not going to go too much in detail about the very boring theoretical foundations, but Jung and the MBTI have been scrutinized and critiqued very widely in psychology literature (you’ll find plenty of them in the paper sourced at the bottom). The core issue in the MBTI and similar tests is that it measures personality types, not traits. This create a purely binary scale, e.g., either extrovert or introvert, and we all know this is much more complicated. Firstly, we are obviously all not defined by a binary scale of either being in the extrovert or introvert group, in reality it’s a much more fluent scale. Although the actual test does give you a numerical strength of your indicator this is not accounted for in the final results. If you look at a test such as the now reasonably broadly applied ‘Big five’ it does a better job of this. Additionally, and I think more importantly, it does not take into account the context. You might feel more comfortable being more ‘extroverted’ in certain contexts, and less in others. Consequently it has been shown to be rather easy to ‘prime’ people to get certain results in certain situations, e.g. taking the test at work or taking the test after an evening with your friends, and will therefore yield different personality results. This neglect of context is one ignored in most, if not all, current personality tests. This seems to be the critical flaw in the application of personality tests in domains like hiring and firing. It cannot create a complete picture of how individuals act and react in certain situations, or how they might cooperate (or not) with certain groups. However to take all possible contexts, environments, emotional mood, or experience and bias into account would be impossible. There is still some evidence of the MBTI, but still overdone considerably by newer tests that have survived much more rigorous empirical testing, such as ‘the big five’.
For a good critique of the MBTI see McCrae & Costa (1989) Reinterpreting the Myers-Briggs type indicator from the perspective of the five-factor model of personality

But I see your level of game.

Pronouncing it would necessitate choosing a side of the argument and possibly skew your results, introducing bias.

    Well played.

  • Reply sparticas jones February 4, 2016 at 5:56 am

So a little off topic but i would be interested to know peoples opinions on the thought. As someone who has had to take these kinds of "personality indicators" (for various reasons), and found them to be for the large part inaccurate in predicting the kinds of activity and values I partake in and enjoy. I have come to the theory that by organizing certain features of a person into preset and separated groups these tests fail to account for the manner in which all of these aspects are interconnected and shaped/effected by each other. Ie By determining someone to be ether "extroverted" or "introverted" prohibits the ability to perceive someone or aspects of someone as being related both. In conclusion by categorizing someone into into confined segments these tests fail to perceive the "big picture". like viewing a puzzle by individual pieces rather than the created picture.

  • Reply Emperor Dodd February 4, 2016 at 6:03 am

Did you notice that you said the word aloud (with the now-standard Idea Channel pronunciation) in the preamble, before asking us how we pronounce it? I would say that might have had an unintended influence, but anyone who wasn't going to answer that way anyway probably still didn't.

I love how you had to compare the third option to the middle of a word, since English words in general never start with that sound :p (We English-speakers can pronounce it at the start of foreign names and loanwords, like Jacques or genre, though)
