On Efficiency – Master Your Time, Unlock Your Full Potential | Life Of A Surgeon – Ep. 3

August 26, 2019

[Music] What’s going on guys? Jay from So, let’s talk about time; I’ve said it time
and time again, time is your most precious resource and your most valuable asset. So, spend it wisely! By becoming the master of your own time, you’re
going to unlock a lot of productivity, unlock a lot more valuable uses of your time. So, what do I mean by that? I’ll give you an example; today I had this
ATLS course which is Advanced Trauma and Life Support. And, it’s a mandatory course, goes from about 7:30
to 5:30 and there’s a lunch break for an hour. Now, the default thing to do would be to – to
go eat for an hour, socialize, relax a little bit and then return to the classes at 1:00. But of course I didn’t do the default thing. Instead of getting lunch for an hour socializing
I said, “How do I want to spend my time?” I ended up doing some Med School Insiders
work, made a few calls and then I went to eat around 12:30 or 12:40, giving myself 20
to 30 minutes to eat food. And while I’m eating, I’m not gonna be getting
much work done. So, yeah, I think socializing is a good use
of my time at that point. What I’m urging you guys to do is, every few
minutes ask yourself, “Am I happy with how I’m spending my time and what I’m doing in
this current moment?” And if not, then adjust accordingly. I know a lot of people like to sit down and
watch TV, and I’m not saying – I am in no way saying that you should stop watching TV
but do something else while you’re watching TV. For me, stretching is my go-to. So, if I’m gonna stretch, maybe I’ll watch
a quick YouTube video or watch part of an episode but then also be very careful to not
get sucked into the episode and stop watching it as soon as I’m done stretching or eating
or whatever it is that I’m doing. You cannot apply this to everything in life,
for example relationships. You can’t tell your significant other, and
I’m telling you this because this is something that happened with me recently, you can’t
tell your significant other that, “You know my time is so important that when I FaceTime
you when we’re, you know, apart from each other, I’m gonna be doing dishes or laundry
or whatever to maximize my time. I’m killing two birds with one stone, talking
to you and doing chores”. That’s not respectful to the other person. That can make them feel like they’re not – they’re
not worth your full attention, right? So, I’m not saying to do this with everything
but if I had to bet, I would say that most of you are probably like me and that you don’t
spend your time as efficiently or as deliberately as you should. So, again, be careful with your time, be deliberate
with your time and you’ll reap huge rewards. So, let me know in the comments how you guys
are going to change how you spend your time. Hope you found this video useful and I will
see you guys of course in the next one. Peace! Oh, snap! I just realized another way that I’m using
this. I’m recording a MSI vlog right now while getting
dinner. That’s efficiency! [Music]

Are you encouraging multitasking? I heard/read a lot on how that is actually not efficient….

I know this is very different to the style of videos you like to make but since you said you are in a relationship why not make a YouTube video (maybe answering questions) with your significant other if you have the time though and I totally respect your privacy reasons as well☺️

Enjoyed you adding the nuance of talking about the reality of relationships as well

The tradition of time management goes way back. You might enjoy this quote: "A person who leaves himself without a plan as animals do, not knowing what he is to do at any given moment, will spend most of his time fruitlessly… Every single breath of yours is a priceless jewel, because it is irreplaceable; once it is gone, there is no return for it. So do not be like fools who rejoice each day as their wealth increases while their lives decrease. What good is there in wealth that increases while one’s lifespan decreases? Do not rejoice except in an increase of knowledge or an increase of good works."

From a Persian scholar named Ghazali, maybe a little more poetic than your message. But I like the music you added. Good taste.

And if the quote piques your interest, there's a video version of Ghazali on time management. You can watch during one of your stretches : )

Cheers, and thanks for sharing the knowledge man

I'm a Law student at university and I'm going to be a sophomore within next few months. I have a few questions to ask you. I'm new to your channel by the way.

Q1: Where is the best location at home for studying?

Q2: I've heard that studying near the sunlight is good for our brain when studying.

So, by this fact, studying nearby sunlight, do we always need to find a time where we can see the sunlight to study?

Q3: Also, should we face the window where the sunlight is coming through or should we turn our back towards the window where the sunlight is coming through?

Q4: Do you take notes by Cornell Notes during medical school?

Q5: Which do you think is better between Cornell Notes and Flashcards?

Q6: Please, could you make a tutorial on how to take notes with Cornell Notes or Flashcards? My phone is Nokia 302 so I don't have Anki. I use regular paper and pen only.

    Please answer me.

    Thank you.
