It’s time for porn to change | Erika Lust | TEDxVienna

December 3, 2019

Translator: Almudena Monzu
Reviewer: Denise RQ (Laughter) Come on. Imagine a scene. A porn scene. What do you see? A woman. Blonde, skin tight dress, red lips, watermelon breasts. A cock. A cock the size of a stallion’s
(Laughter) between her pursed lips. She is giving him a blow job. Why? Because this nice guy came to her rescue
when her car broke down. (Laughter) (Applause) After the ‘thank you-blowjob,’ he cums all over her face,
and she smiles (Laughter) in fake pleasure. That is porn. And it’s time for porn tochange. I went from being a Political Science
and Gender Studies graduate in Sweden to a feminist adult filmmaker
in Barcelona. (Laughter) The last 15 years of my life
have been an amazing trip, an amazing journey from feeling
dirty and guilty for watching porn to creating the adult cinema
thatIwant to watch. My first time was at a sleepover party with my best girlfriends. Popcorn, pyjamas, and porn. We expected to discover
the mystery of sex. The forbidden fruit. We ended up laughing,
we ended up giggling, we ended up feeling – – repulsion. The movie went back to the secret hiding place
of my friend’s father. Six years later,
I’m at my freshmen year at University and my boyfriend suggests
that we watch a porno. “Should I give it another try?” Stop. Before we press ‘play, ‘ remember
where I came from: Sweden. Probably the best place
to grow up with a feminist conscience. One of the first… no!
the first country in the world to make Sex Education
mandatory in schools. Meet me, a feminist, a sex positive feminist. I own my own body. I can have sex
just for pleasure, like guys. So back to my dorm room, where my boyfriend
is waiting impatiently. We press ‘play.’ And what do I see? A woman, blonde, skin tight dress,
red lips, watermelon breasts. Nothing had changed. Nothinghaschanged. Horny housewives,
desperate nannies, fuck bunnies; women as objects fulfilling men’s desires. So there I was,
the feminist me felt cheated, the activist me felt mad, the sexual me felt aroused. Arousal tasted sweet. Objectification tasted bitter. I was confused. And I did what we do
when we feel confused: I blamed my boyfriend. (Laughter) Oh, yeah. I blamed men. I blamed porn. Oh, yeah. Until I came across “Hardcore,” a book by Linda Williams,
a Berkeley Professor. I learned that porn isn’t just porn. Porn is actually adiscourse. A discourse about sexuality, about masculinity, about femininity, and the roles we play. Thatwas myEurekamoment. I realized that the only ones participating in the discourse
of pornography are men. Chauvinistic men. Narrow-minded men. Men with little sexual intelligence. But, hasn’t the world changed? Hasn’t the role of women changed? Hasn’t it changed in politics?
In the workplace, at home, in bed? And isn’t the world
because of that a better place? Everywhere, the role
of women is under debate. Everywhere, except in the porn industry. It’s time for porn to change, and for that we need women. We need women in the leadership roles, as producers,
as directors, as scriptwriters. I don’t want to get women out of porn, I want to get women into porn. (Applause) We need women in porn.
Behind the camera. And that’s exactly what I did. In 2004, I was studying film direction and for my final short film project
I thought: “Let’s make a porno,
but let’s make it different. Let’s make an indie film with my values.” I shot “The Good Girl,” and I made it available
for free on the Internet. I couldn’t believe the reception it got. Millions of downloads in just a few days. The film attracted media coverage.
I attracted media coverage. I was on a high.
I wanted to embrace the world. My mom called me and said, (Swedish) “Vad i helvete gör Du, Erika?” (Laughter) “What the hell are you doing, Erika? This will affect your future,
your career, your life. What will the neighbours say?” (Laughter) I understand their association
with the word ‘porn’: dirt, smut, low culture. But it was a career as a filmmaker
I wanted to pursue, not as a pornographer. A filmmaker exploring the beauty of sex from a different perspective,
from a female perspective. Do you know that one third
of all Internet traffic is estimated to be pornography? That’s a lot of traffic, eh? Do you know that every 4th search request is someone googling for porn? Are you aware
that teenagers, our children, are watching porn online
before they even have sex? Porn istoday’s sex education. And it’s impacting
on our gender education. And what is
our children’s source of inspiration? Bad, wrong, chauvinistic porn. This is why
it’stime forporntochange. Adult content has of course
the power to arouse, but also to educate and to inspire. I believe that it’s
our generation’s responsibility to rethink pornography. Don’t get me wrong:
the sex can stay dirty, but the values have to be clean. (Applause) I have two daughters,
Lara, 7, and Liv, 4; and I don’t want them to learn
about self-esteem and body image from photoshopped supermodels. I don’t want them to smoke
or to eat crappy fast food, and I definitely don’t want them
to learn about sex from bad, sexist porn. We need to teach our children to respect and value themselves
and their sexuality. We need to teach them to think critically
about sexual representations. And that, whether you like it
or not, includes porn. Imagine a scene. A different scene. I see a man, an attractive man. He weaves his way
through the wet streets of a city. He is on his way to meet a woman.
A woman he met recently at an event. It was an inspiring event. (Laughter) An event that made his senses soar. It was a TEDx. (Laughter) It was thisTEDx. And cut. I don’t know how this scene ends.
I leave it up to your imagination. But I do know thatthistime, he’s not the only one receiving pleasure. Andthat, for me,
is an idea worth spreading your legs for. (Laughter) (Applause) Thank you.

I love the futility of her argument as she basically wasted everyone's time by turning this TEDx talk into a long promotional ad for her films.

she is fighting the law of economics: supply and demand

she might sway some people here and there, some people on this youtube page comment as if they had an epiphany, however… the free market doesn't care!

Of course you should trust a Berkley professor, even if her assumption is faulty. Pornography is not a form of discourse. Porn consists of presentational symbols. This distinction was made by a female philosopher in the 1940s. If you attempt to read discursive symbolism into a non-discursive medium you are trying to peel an apple as if it's an orange. You won't get nice self-contained segments, you'll get mush. That's what we have here. Porn is not viewed as if it were sex education because it's not intended to be viewed as sex education. Porn is used for sexual stimulation. Only idiots watch porn for sex education, just like only idiots watch romantic comedies for dating tips or action movies for learning about exercise. If you go by this lady's logic you could by the same token accuse action movie makers for ableism, because if a normal person tried to mimick action movie exercises they'd hurt themselves. It's not time for porn to "shaenge". Everyone knows mainstream porn is unimaginative and trite garbage. That's why so many turn to amateur porn and alternative porn. If you want to make shitty feminist porn go ahead but don't imply that you deserve hegemony because you're wymmyn.

Yay more porn. Not big fan of porn. In the end teaching people to have sex and that's it creates alot of single mom's or dad's. Single parents gotta work, kids raised with barely a parent. Kids grow up and now you have an adult that may not have horrible habits but couldve been better. may sound critical but it's true. Porn messes your mind up anyways. Buuuuuut whatever, it feels good so people do it. And it's really hard to quit.

  • Reply Mustafa May 28, 2016 at 6:50 pm

Oh my I feel sorry for her

If her only experience of pornography happened to be from the male perspective, then ofcourse (given her own testimony) she would have felt dissatisfied with not being able to relate. Porn primarily serves a function like that of consumption. A function catered predominantly by men, as is expected to be, given the desire of such demand stems predominantly from men. So then for her to say women should create porn is a meaningless futile exercise as she clearly has no need for it to begin with. It's only her "anger" at not being able to relate to the "male gaze" that drove her to "compete". A false sense of addressing a wrong when no real objective wrong was identified to begin with.

She casualy employs terms like "objectified" when experiencing viewing pornography, but who is forcing her to watch or indeed engage with such content to begin?

This is a damn sight refreshing compared to third wave feminists endlessly complaining about video games.  Erika thought there was something wrong with the porn industry, but instead of just complaining like Anita Sarkeesian they should change Erika went out and made it herself.   Which is what most gamers have been saying to people complaining about video games.  An entertainment industry has absolutely no obligation to do what you think they should do, if you want change then make it yourself.

  • Reply Odd Jørgen July 7, 2016 at 12:33 am

Porn today is so painful to watch, the fake pleasure, the over-edited scenes, the unbelieveable stamina of men (like wtf?) and the (mostly) dehumanization of women in addition to having a negative impact on young people who doesn't know jack shit and thinks that what they see there,on the computer screen is the real thing, and so strives too bring that into the real world. Disgusting, really.

All the points above is why I steer clear from such videos and mainly search for amateur stuff, which is closest to the real thing.

But as long as people can differ from the fake and the real thing I guess it's all good, right?

  • Reply lifebarier July 13, 2016 at 1:51 pm

Porn doesn't need to change. It's fantasy and only feminists trying to make propaganda "science" from everything doesn't understand that. You need to find porn you like and leave other people porn they like. But nooo. You feminists always want to destroy what you don't like. Ban games, ban porn, bad adds… Go to hell.

  • Reply James July 25, 2016 at 6:23 pm

It's time to censor porn people!! Because people can't jerk off to whatever they want.

News flash porn movies aren't documentaries on how to have sex, it's for people's enjoyment.

I don't normally shift blame when I sin but the females in porn are the ones ruining our lives.
they are the ones who's faces are shown if u ever watch porn u notice the man's face is never shown it's the woman who make the millions on our suffering

Great job! Teens watch porn because they think this is how to be an adult, that's what adults do. When I was a teen they were all saying that, trying to do the same things, no one was thinking "maybe there's a different way". Now people will have the choice, there won't be only one kind of porn.

You can make whatever kind of porn you want, but when you make statements like "It's time for porn to change" and bitch about current gender roles in the porn industry just shows me that you're a child who is highly insecure. Especially when in society there is much more gender inequality with Men than with Women. How about you realize those injustices Men go through too?! It will at least sort of help your argument because it will show that you're not just thinking about yourself or your own fucking gender.

I agree with Erika Lust, porn MUST change. As it stands right now, it's not very entertaining or compelling. And as far as it concerns African Americans, it's just downright BAD. Adult films CAN be so much better. Erika's films are shot well, and they're pretty good, I would compare them to Joe Sarno's films of the late 50's and early 60's before the hardcore era came in. I mean, why can't there be sex positive, erotic adult movies? Where the people in them are attractive but not freakish? Where the sex can be erotic and not extreme? Where African Americans and other ethnic groups aren't depicted as stereotypes?

  • Reply Anonymous asdfg July 2, 2017 at 9:19 pm

as a female, I love porn. But I love what she's doing. I think they represented her really well in Hot Girls Wanted:Turned On, It seems like she just wants to make porn the way she feels it should be made and that's awesome. There's not a lot of variety in porn, it's nice that she is making an alternative to all the same shit on pornhub all the time. I feel like maybe if there was more females into porn production, it could bring some more variety because men and women have different views on sex and what turns them on.
