Big Ben: Changing the time on the Great Clock

January 14, 2020

>>Paul (Clock Mechanic): So, here we are at the top of the Great Clock of Westminster getting ready to put
the clocks forward we’ve already silenced the chiming mechanism and we’ve silenced the strike mechanism and we’re now just about turned the dial lights off>>Ian (Clock Mechanic): Once the downlights are off we then advance the hands to what would be the new midnight while
this is going on we will then carry out maintenance on
the clock itself which involves cleaning, oiling and looking for any defects of the clock
>>Paul: the official time change is at two o’clock in the morning we
actually start the clock at twelve o’clock new time, this gives us a chance to get it
as accurate as we can so when it starts chiming and striking for the first time at two o’clock that would be nice an accurate. So now just getting ready to start the clock.
My colleagues gonna count me down and we’ll just start the mechanism going. That’s its so the clock is now ticking again so at
this point we switch the dial lights back on and it will start chiming and striking for British Summer Time

A very interesting video of Big Ben being adjusted when BST begins & consequently ends too! An interesting job to have charge of the Great Clock & all clocks at the Palace of Westminster!

Pretty cool how it changes the way it does. It's amazing how it does not go out of control
